The restaurant popularized long, long ago by Sex and The City — the TV show, not the movie — has outlasted the Cosmopolitan and several styles of Manolo Blahniks thanks to its inventive Japanese, Peruvian and Brazilian fusion cuisine. While perhaps puzzling, that fusion is a far more successful match than the SATC movie sequel. Turns out, Brazil boasts the largest population of Japanese outside of Japan. This fascinating, rich cultural juxtaposition inspired owner Shimon Bokovza to create SUSHISAMBA.
"I was moved by these vastly different cultures living side-by-side in Brazil and Peru," explains Bokovza. "I wanted to recreate the experience in New York because we truly are the world's Mecca of the cultural mix."
After making his culinary splash in NYC, SUSHISAMBA expanded to Las Vegas, Chicago, and, thankfully, Miami, where it remains on the cutting edge of cuisine and scene, as we noticed on a recent complimentary visit.
